Abstract

The article is divided into three main sections. The first deals with provocative image of trans Jesus published by the educational department of the Icelandic National Church during the fall of 2020. This discussion is intertwined with a critique of the opposite-sex ideology that underlies the Christian understanding of gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.
The middle section discusses the social context of the image of trans Jesus focusing on the world-wide human rights struggle of LGBTI people, as well as the recent Icelandic law on sexual autonomy. Finally, the reactions of two Icelandic theologians and scholars to the image of trans Jesus are discussed and related to the LGBTI context as well as to current Christian discourse on the importance of allowing the context to influence theology.
