Submissions
Author Guidelines
Articles should be submitted by email to the email address tum@hi.is in this template
The Icelandic Journal of Education is published twice a year and articles can be submitted all year round. In general, the Journal publishes articles in the order in which they become ready for publication.
The editors of the Journal determine whether a manuscript should be submitted to a reviewer, and subsequently decide, after the review, whether the article in question is to be accepted by the Journal. An editorial board is available for consultation in this context. When deciding on the publication of articles, the first item of policy to note is that the articles should be of academic or research-related content; secondly, that they are relevant to those involved in matters of pedagogy and education in a broad sense and; thirdly, that the articles are in line with the overall perspective of the Journal at any given time. The main rule is that submitted articles must not have been published elsewhere.
The first author of an article assumes responsibility for its content and takes care of all communication with the editor. Authors’ names appear in the same order as in the manuscript. If editors see the article as relevant to the purpose of the Journal and as fulfilling demands regarding content and presentation, it is submitted for review to at least two academics. When the article has been reviewed, it is returned to the author, together with the editors’ report. If the article has been assessed as suitable for publication after specific amendments have been made (category 2), the author revises and amends it in accordance with recommendations made by the reviewers and the editorial board. Then the author resubmits the article accompanied by a report on completed amendments. Next the article is submitted to a reviewer and subsequently a decision is made with regard to publication. In the event that the author is invited to submit a new article (category 3) he/she must also complete a report on alterations made. The rewrite of the article will then be assessed by the editors in the same way as a new article, and submitted for review.
The publication of articles in the Journal includes permission to publish in electronic and printed format. A submitted article with request for publication entails such a permission. The author is responsible for the proof copy of an article, although the Journal reserves the right to alter wording or spelling during final preparation for publication, in the event that this is deemed necessary.
Those requirements relate to manuscripts in Icelandic and are based on the assumption that the presentation of content complies with conventions which apply in recognised foreign journals specialising in pedagogy and education in a broad sense. The APA system is used as a basis for the format and presentation of bibliographies, in-text references, the presentation of tables and figures, chapter headings and the length of direct citations. Footnotes will not be accepted, although endnotes are permitted, if needed, under the title of Comments. The use of these, however, should be minimal and they must be placed directly after the text of the article. Rules on manuscript structure and content may be accessed in the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, as well as at the writing guidelines website of the School of Education, University of Iceland Leiðbeiningavefur ritvers Menntavísindasviðs Háskóla Íslands (https://skrif.hi.is/ritver). References to Icelandic authors must comprise both first and second name, instead of second name only as applies to foreign authors. In a bibliography, Icelandic authors must also be alphabetically arranged on the basis of their first name. Direct citations in foreign languages are expected to be translated into Icelandic and it must be made clear that this is the author’s translation, unless translated by another.
Guidelines for preparing manuscripts
Important points regarding manuscript submission. Please review your manuscript prior to submission with a view to this checklist:
- The average length of manuscripts shall range from 5000 to 8500 words, including bibliography, comments and an abstract in Icelandic and English. If there are only very few figures and tables, these need not be included in the word count.
- Manuscripts shall be prepared in 12 point typeface (Times New Roman), 1.5 line spacing. Indented citations shall be presented in 11 point typeface and without quotation marks.
- One space follows a full stop/period.
- Italics shall be avoided and not, for example, used when foreign words are presented in brackets. Abbreviations shall also be avoided.
- Icelandic quotation marks shall be used and other regulations regarding punctuation marks shall be adhered to; for instance a hyphen (-), differentiated from a dash (–) a dash is used, for example, to connect age ranges, page numbers and years.
- If applicable, a clear distinction shall be made between chapter headings and subheadings.
- Article titles in English and chapter headings shall be centred on the page in 14 point bold lowercase typeface.
- Subheadings within chapters shall be in 12 point bold typeface and placed at the beginning of a line.
- In the event that an additional level of headings is required – which should be avoided, however – these shall be in 12 point italic typeface.
- References to authors’ own works shall be concealed from identification in such a way that a reference reads: “Author, year”; or “Author and colleagues, year”.
- Figures and tables shall be presented as simply as possible.
- Articles shall be carefully revised with regard to language and presentation.
- The reference list shall be presented in accordance with the APA style; cf. the writing guidelines website of the School of Education, University of Iceland (Leiðbeiningavefur ritvers Menntavísindasviðs Háskóla Íslands). All the information therein (such as titles of articles and books, where subtitles must also be indicated, page numbers in journals, authors’ names and initials) must be clear and correct. A DOI identifier must be included if applicable.
- It must be noted that, despite information to the contrary in APA documentation, the Icelandic Journal of Education requires all magazine issue numbers to be included. The Journal also stipulates that the Ministry of Education, as the publisher of general school curricula, be placed in the author’s position in citations and references.
- The article must be accompanied by a 100-150 word abstract in Icelandic and a 600-800 word abstract in English, as well as the article title in English.
- The article shall include 3-5 key words, both in Icelandic and English.
- The article shall be accompanied by a 40-70 word CV of the author(s), indicating email address, current position, degree qualifications (academic field, university, dates) and main research areas.
- A cover letter must accompany the article, outlining its content, and requesting publication. The letter must also contain a list of disguised references to author’s/authors’ own works.
- The Journal also accepts manuscripts of research articles in English. Rules relating to presentation and final layout are based on US versions of the APA system. No information is required in Icelandic in such manuscripts. The editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts which neither deal with Icelandic research topics nor are written by authors resident in Iceland.
