Útdráttur

This article introduces a joint project between the German department of the University of Iceland and the Icelandic department of the Humboldt University Berlin where students produced podcasts in their respective foreign languages. It describes what a podcast is, delivers a short overview of the advantages and opportunities of using podcasting in language teaching and gives some hints about the technology behind it. Using podcasting in language teaching became a more and more interesting method during the last few years. Postcasts are a varied media that can complement the teaching in many different ways. Both using already existing podcasts for listening comprehension exercises and producing recordings with texts, exercises or extra material are a useful addition to today’s teaching as it is free of charge, popular, life-like and easy to use. The teaching becomes process- and project-oriented and it encourages the students to work independently and take responsibility. This bilingual project gave the students a good chance to reflect about their prejudices and stereotypes and made them more culturally sensitive by en - couraging communication between German and Icelandic students.
